I love handmade envelopes but it's taken me a while to have a go at making my own but I have to say I now love making them and got carried away and made loads!
Want to make some? here is how:
Find an envelope the same size as one you want to make and carefully pull it open. This will be your template.
Select some paper for your envelope. You can use anything including magazine pages, wall paper or scrap paper.
Draw round your envelope....
and cut it out.
Now this is the bit I just discovered and it makes your finished envelope really neat.
Place your envelope template on top of your cut out envelope. Fold the envelopes together using the template envelope as a guide for the folds.
Fold all the sides in, remove the template envelope.......
and glue the side flaps closed.
There you go, handmade envelopes, you can even make your own glue that can be licked to seal closed.

Definitely a winner! I know people who make their own paper even from recycled paper but that is time consuming and requires material that I can get readily. But the envelopes! I may never buy another envelope. Thanks for the clear directions and the pictures!

I used to make these all the time, but stopped because the post office can be a pain. First of all, ones made from magazine pages often tore and arrived at their destination damaged. I also had some come back to me because the PO said they met requirements...now with the new postage rule based partly on size, who knows what they'd argue. *sigh*
good point Jenny, I will probably use mine for greeting cards, but the ones made from thinker paper would be a strong as any envelopes you could buy.

My postman complements me everytime and told me that in France (where I live) the postperons call it "post art". But he said that they see less and less of it now.

I keep it simple and just fold it almost in half with a flap. Goes quite quickly.

Thanks! I didn't want to go buy a pack of envelopes just for one that I needed, so I made my own using your tutorial! I made mine out of two plain white pieces of paper taped together though. Money saver!
